ST JOHN’S, Antigua: As elections draw nearer in Antigua and Barbuda, there is increasing attack and counter attack between the rival parties, the governing United Progressive Party (UPP) and the opposition Antigua Labour Party (ALP).

The Antigua Sun reported that the UPP organised a show on Thursday depicting a courtroom scene in which ALP leaders were on trial for alleged fraud involving millions of dollars.

At the rally, Minister of Justice Colin Derrick said that three weeks ago the Antigua government received the complete and comprehensive report on the IHI Debt Repayment Scheme performed by Robert Linquist, a forensic financial investigator, which accuses at least two top ALP members of massive fraud and corruption.

The newspaper reported that Derrick said, "You will hear some of the individuals who will bring goose pimples to your skin and you can't believe that they too were involved."

He warned that, if the ALP is re-elected, the case will be abandoned.

He indicated that they have additional lawyers, including Geoffrey Robertson QC, who is reviewing the case.

Harold Lovell
UPP Member of Parliament Harold Lovell accused the ALP of "having a philosophy of scampishness".

"Justice Day is May 12, are you ready to execute your sentence on Justice Day?" Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer asked his audience.

Meanwhile the Deputy Leader of the ALP, Gaston Browne, described the court room drama "as a poppy show".

Browne said that the ALP is ready for the elections, but the opposition party expressed concern that the overseas observers, particularly the CARICOM Secretariat and the Commonwealth Secretariat, were invited too late.

He added that now the date for the elections is set his party will increase its level of activism by holding more public meetings and on the ground, including door to door campaigning.
