Official welcome for Usain Bolt in Antigua and Barbuda

FeaturesST JOHN’S, Antigua -- Jamaican and world sprint record holder Usain Bolt on Friday received an official welcome to Antigua and Barbuda when he arrived at the VC Bird International Airport for a private engagement.

Governor General Dame Louise Lake-Tack, Prime Minister Baldwin Spencer, National Hero Sir Vivian Richards and Antiguan sprinter Daniel “Bakka” Bailey were among the individuals who welcomed Usain Bolt and members of his athletics club to Antigua and Barbuda.

Dame Louise Lake-Tack who is an avid fan of athletics said that it was a delight for her to meet Usain as she considers him a remarkable athlete and a symbol of what young people can achieve in the Caribbean. “I am delighted to be in the company of such a fine young man who has achieved so much through hard work and genuine talent,” said Dame Louise.

Spencer in his remarks praised Usain Bolt for his accomplishments and pointed out that his world records are symbols of what we as a Caribbean people can accomplish. He stated that the entire Caribbean is immensely proud of him and is looking forward to Bolt and his colleagues maintaining dominance in the field of athletics.

Sir Vivian Richards also had praise for Usain noting that it is a joy for him to see young people excelling at such high levels and is confident that Usain will remain at the top of his field for many more years to come.

In response Usain Bolt said that it was a pleasure for him to be in Antigua and Barbuda and is hoping to enjoy as many of the 365 beaches that the country has to offer. He said that he cherishes the friendship he has with Antiguan Daniel Bailey and is looking forward to their continued good working relationship.

Usain Bolt who is accompanied by his brother Sadiki Bolt and fellow athletes Yohan Blake, Garth Garvey, Abadoo Bryan and Jermaine Gonzales will depart Antigua and Barbuda early next week.
